So, I'm going to be the photographer at a big bellydance festival in San diego tomorrow and was wondering what type of photos the dancers would probably be interesteed in. I'm very experienced with ballroom/dancesport photography, but have never done bellydance shots before. Any suggestions would be most appreciated. Thanks!

Like any action-photography, bellydancers like to see the movement in their photos. I personanlly like seeing opening and ending poses with a good mix of shots from the actual performance. Some dancers may choose to move part of their routine from standing to floor work...those shots are good. It's also neat when pictures caputer the hips of the costume swaying.

Hmmm...kind of difficult to describe here.

This site (http://www.geocities.com/Broadway/Stage/7429/index.htm) has quite a few bellydance photos that you may want to take a look at. There are several galleries available through the links at the left of the page.

Hope this helps. Please let us know how the photos go.

Thanks for the feedback, suggestions, and samples DDL!

I was one of the photographers at the San Diego Area Middle Eastern Dance Association's 2005 faire last Sunday. If you want to see my photos from the event you can check out my album of the event at printroom.com/pro/JSMphoto under "SAMEDA Faire 2005." This was the first time I've ever really watched belly dancing (let alone shot it! ) so any feedback or suggestions for the futer would be most appreciated. :D

I love the photos! You did an amazing job... Too bad you weren't close to us or I'd have to bring you to our next performance to get some great shots.

Have your subjects seen the photos yet? What did they think?

Thanks DDL, given your advice it was actually fairly easy... I'm used to dress movement from ballroom photography and, truth be told, belly dancers don't move as fast or as much!

Seriously, having someone in one place on a stage and without competitors and judges getting between me and them makes it a lot easier to aqctually get the shots I want.

As far as the people I got shots of, all I know is that the album has been accessed over 500 times so far... but with zero orders. :(

(As an aside, if you're ever having a big event in you area let me know... I'm always willing to try and work out deals for friends! :D )
