Okay, you guys! I'm new here and I signed up looking for some brainstorming help.
Every year one of the theaters that I've done a couple of shows with, holds a One-Act Festival featuring works by local writers.
It's usually 6 pieces, no more than 20 minutes long.
One of them is usually a dance piece and I would like to submit for it this year.
Now in previous years, the dance pieces have all been presented as sort of music videos. The last 2 years were done by the same choreographer who is a an older male, ex-ballet dancer. I am a late 20's modern/musical theater dancer with a strong ballroom and ballet background.
His M.O. seems to be taking modern pop and rock music and choreographing "classic" ballet dances en pointe to it. The result is usually a ballet-like music video.
I want to take a different route and not present my piece so much as a dance set to music. I feel like he was way too literal with his music.
Rather I'd like to come up with a story to tell and design dances around it. I don't want the music to be so literally translating the story.
What I am looking for are ideas on how I can accomplish this. What are some stories that can be told through dance? What are topics that might interest an audience? Where can I find good contemporary music that is interesting but does not tell the story for me?
I don't want to go a musical theatre route at all with this. I would like to showcase my contemporary choreography, some jazz and possibly some adagio pair dancing.
Any and all ideas are welcome! Thanks, you guys. |
