From a previous thread on another discussion board...
[quote:a25ecac7a5="Kuriin"]I wanna learn how to shimmy. :([/quote:a25ecac7a5]
It's SO much fun and pretty simple to learn. Start by slowly moving your hips up and down... Actually, here's a better start for you:
- Stand with your legs about hip width apart
- Slightly bend your knees
- Place your spine in a neutral position by pulling your belly button to your spine
- Now push your right hip up while keeping everything else still (i.e. don't move your shoulders or ribs, just your hip). Your left hip will drop slightly and your right knee may unbend some while your left knee goes into a deeper bend.
- Repeat to the left... Push your left hip up while dropping your righ hip down.
- Continue to repeat at a slow pace and remember to breath. Once you're comfortable at a slow pace, start going faster and just continue speeding up. Remember to stay relaxed and if you feel yourself starting to tighten, just slow it down. |

Those were very good directions! And actually what may help (and always helped me with posture) is to imagine that you are a puppet being pulled by a string at the top of your head, but with knees still bent. If you do this, you almost automatically stand upright, however your butt (to put it as politally but directly as possible) will be tucked in, not sticking out.
So that may or may not work for ya, but hey, give it a try. |
