Modern dance is a rebellious form of ballet. - Isadora Duncan (or was it Doris Humphrey?).

Modern dance is free flow.
Modern dance is fall and recovery.
modern dance is contract and release.

Modern dance is every dance compacted into one style.

Modern is everything that ballet is and is not...at the same time. :P It's technique and artistry that breaks rules and barriers.

Think of modern dance allowing you to do everything you want to do in ballet but can't. In this sense: sometimes ballet is restraining. sometimes you feel like the music calls for something more expressive, or something that the strict rules of ballet do not allow for. Modern allows this to take place. The choreography can call for flexed feet, contractions, things of the sort. There is still right way to dance modern, it isn't just whatever you want however you want, but it allows the dancer to express fully what the music calls for.
