I've always loved dancing. I've danced ever since I was a kid, never been taught anything, and over time, discovered that I had imbibed elements of popping, waving, liquid dancing and robot into my style. But, because I've never learnt it formally, I run out of ideas very fast. I can move any which way, but I don't know many techniques to perform, and within a short while my dancing becomes very repetitive.

So I tried going to a dance class. I asked them whether they would teach me popping et. al. and they said no, that's advanced stuff, you'll have to learn hip-hop first. I said okay, I'll try it out. And honestly, I was pretty bad. Memorizing a technique took quite a while, I could barely remember the sequence of steps, I often stopped because it was too fast for me
and I found it involving too much energy.

I was out of my comfort zone. Not a bad thing, but I was really upset to discover that I didn't have any talent for what they were teaching me. It just didn't feel natural. And not just that, I knew I would not use most of the steps they were teaching me. So, I've stopped going atm.

So, what I'd like to know is, why doesn't my talent in popping translate to hip hop? Do I really need hip hop to pop? And can I learn most of what I want to learn off the internet?

Is It necessary? No it isn't really. Like you said, they don't teach you moves(that you would use in a dance battle), they teach you choreographed pieces. But if you plan on dancing in a group of hip-hop dancers then it is very important. Not everyone can pop, and not everyone pops the same way,(Unless you are Electric Boogaloo) but everyone can swing their hip to the right you feel me?

Straight up with you, if it took to much energy for you to do a choreographed piece, you're probably not popping right. Popping (a general term for, ticking, locking, boogaloo, and waves) requires a lot of energy if you're doing it right, the more energy you put into something, the more dynamic it looks!

Lastly, hip-hop classes can be beneficial though, you could always still little bits and pieces of a dance you learned and throw them into the mix in a dance battle or what not. Not to mention, it makes you a much more disciplined dancer.
