Jazz style dancing and modern style dancing are going to be different.
Ballet is the most rigid and controlled in terms of body movements and such. Jazz is a bit lighter, more relaxed than ballet, but still has a level of rigig to it. Many jazz moves can be funked up and moved into the hip hop category. Modern is based off ballet, but is much less restricting.
It's really difficult to explain in words. My best recommendation is to see a recital performance at your local dance studio. To see the three style of dance you can really understand the differences. |

Modern is all about moving. IN modern, you never stop moving. It's about trying new things in dance, even if they haven't been done before.
Examples:
Tendus in parallel first position.
Turned in rond de jambes
Sodebasques (sp?) not in cupe (sp?) and not pointing your feet.
Sometimes it can even just be rolling around on the floor!!! |

| I would have to disagree with you slightly. In some styles of modern (those I personally prefer) it is true that the movement is continuous and you never stop moving. However, there are other techniques with very abrupt, pronounced movement in which there one establishes a position or shape before moving instead of moving continuously through the shape. Make sense? |

| Hi. That's what I thought too, that modern dancing was all about constant movement but I was able to chat with this dance instructor at itzamatch and he said that it's more about letting go of the conventional patterned steps and just going as you please, pausing mindfully without making it deliberate and all that. I'm not a dancer but my best friend is and I have seen her shift from ballet to jazz and now modern dancing. She can't even describe what it is but she says she loves doing it better than the rest. |
