Hi all,

first off a quick introduction...

My name's Neil and I work for a company called KNT Danceworks in Manchester City Centre (UK). I trained for 3 years at the Northern Ballet School and danced for some time with the Slovak National Ballet.

Now I run our highly popular adult dance classes right in the city centre as well as teaching Primary school classes with a company called Premier Sport and setting up our new childrens classes out in Blackley.

The emphasis with our adult classes is on fun, and as such we tend to use popular music for our classes as opposed to traditional accompaniment. The idea of this thread is we can all share ideas for music for ballet classes (as I know many other people also try to use modern music in their classes and it's never easy to find a 6/8 or waltz in pop music). I anyone finds any traditional accompaniment on cd then please feel free to recommend those (personally I'd recommend sylvain Durand).

I'll start things off by posting the playlist we use for our classes at the moment:

plies: empire state of mind part 2 (Alicia keys)
tendus: right now (leon Jackson)
glisses: you've got the love (Florence and the machine)
fondus: Russian roulette (rihanna)
adage: distance and time (Alicia keys)
grand battements: whistle for the choir (the fratellis)
stretch: when the night feels my song (Bedouin soundclash) (can also be used for pose turns and the like)

centre practice/adage: ave maria (beyonce)
pirouettes (waltz): no other love (chuck prophet... If you have trouble finding this one search for the soundtrack to ps. I love you)
petit allegro: ego (the Saturdays)
grand allegro: you shook me all night long (ac/dc)
alternative grand allegro: thinking over (Dana glover and coldplay) note this song is quite a bit slower than the first grand allegro
cool down/reverence: happy (leona lewis)

Hope some of these tracks give people some cool ideas!

Regards,
Neil @ KNT Danceworks

That play list sounds absolutely great. I'm in no way a ballet expert, but I would have to say that throwing in the AC/DC song really won me over. Sounds like the people in your class probably have an amazing time every time they show up!

Using popular music really makes a difference... rhythm can sometimes be a little bit off but for casual, fun classes it doesn't matter too much, can really make for a fun class!!!

If you can't handle using it straight away, there are some accompaniment cds that use oasis, songs from various musicals etc. nothing quite like singing along at the Barre (have occasional had people singing in my class... I tell them it helps with breathing and they all love it!)
