There always has to be some trick or other to everything even if it takes a while to figure out what the trick exactly is. There is the obvious approach to it; practice, practice and of coarse there comes more practice through repetive movement, but that can take a while and is not the most fun to do. There is nothing wrong with it and if it works for you then fine, just do it and forget about reading the rest of this...
I find it easier to practice spotting when you have something to spot with and know what your trying to focus on. Figure out which way you are doing your pirouette and choose a place of focus at about eye level and spot towards that. To make it more interesting and easier for when your practcing at home you can use brightly coloured sticky notes or a photo of your crush or your favourite celebrity. It also wouldn't hurt to practice them to some grovy music that you like to help keep you motivated to practice and keep working on them. Remember to keep you head straight and try not to drop it, that usual helps. Below are a list of some videos that might help you to perfect your spotting.
