Hey, I'm a newbie here just as much as I am on the breakdance floor.

I'm from a place where breakdancing isn't popular, nor used, plus I'm a girl and I got no friends interested in this as I am... So it's pretty tough for me to learn.

I just wanted to ask for some opinions: can I actually be successful learning in such circumstances? (I also have no place to practice  ) And have any of you good tips on how I can learn by myself without ending up breaking my neck and having to crawl over to the telephone or something? Thanks.

p.s. It's so scary trying to learn how to handstand without anyone actually teaching it! Has anyone ever successfully learned this via internet stuff alone?

Haha, the site's not dead, it's just lonely...

It's always more difficult, from my experience, for girls to start breaking. Traditionally girls have thinner wrists, and thus have a longer way to go when getting used to putting weight on them. Naturally, gymnasts would have to be an exception to this, but I haven't met any female gymnasts yet.

I think that learning to handstand is something that you can learn on your own pretty well. It's nice to have someone there to spot you (grabbing and positioning your legs correctly) and run you through it, but if you have a wall and a lot of patience, you'll get it without a problem. Try doing handstands with your back touching the wall. Once you get a good feel for this, then turn 90 degrees so only your side can touch the wall. And then do them without the wall.

I will say this, though. Breakdancing is something that takes a lot of time. Not only do you have to refine form and style, similar to every dance style, but there's a whole new set of muscles that have to become very strong before you can see your progress really take off. Granted, form is much more subjective in breakdancing than in other styles of dance, so it's definitely easier when it comes to that. Check out some of the other threads here for some ideas, and just watch tons of videos!

Thanks for taking the time to read this and welcome to Dance Forums!

Hullo! SDsalsaguy and pr, thank you for welcoming me. :D I was just looking around the other threads, but I must say it is a tad bit harder to learn since it's all words.. Still, being mentored at all is greatly appreciated so yeah. ^.^

BBoy riPHt, hello and thank you very much for your opinion. I decided working on my arms (I think they're pretty weak) because when I tried your advice on hand-standing next to a wall, I hit my head. The second time I tried it, I crumbled down. That's why I decided to train my arms first hahahaha.

Also, does that mean girls always have to wear a tight shirt when hand-standing? (You know.. since they, uhh, follow gravity and all...)

Well, I'll be jumping over to the other threads now and searching for videos. :D Thank you again people! *hug*

Are you locking your elbows when you do handstands? You shouldn't need a whole lot of strength for handstands, only strong wrists. If you hit your head, then that means you're not spotting the right way. Think of it this way, if you're standing facing the wall, your face should point away from the wall when you get on your hands.

Let me know if you have any other questions!
