There's a quick history on my site at www.dancersdreamland.com. From the top menu select "Styles" and then "Irish."

For videos, Riverdance and Lord of the Dance are probably the most popular or easily locatable videos of Irish style dancing.

Here's an example of hardshoe: http://youtube.com/watch?v=aIYD1jps0Go

Here's a softshoe: http://youtube.com/watch?v=QoZxOTJdZXE

The softshoe one is a slip jig, which is a typically feminine dance. Boys can do softshoe, just not typically slip jigs.

ah here, go for Riverdance if you're going for Irish dancing. Not lord of the dance. *I* couldhave done lord of the dance, and i haven't done Irish dancing since I was about 8. I'm now 22. The hard shoe dancing that the lads do in it is fantasticly AMAZING though. Loved that part. The girl dancing was just showing off the body, and twirling.

Riverdance... that shows the dancing that should be done. I don't just mean the actual riverdance dance, but that whole show. If you can get your hands on the nova scotia set (it has the song lift the wings in the middle of it in the city hall version I think), it's fantastic. There's set dancing in it, and that's what Irish dancing is to me. FUN! :D Pure, unadulterated, fun! :D at least, the set dancing is. I haven't done solo Irish dancing for years, but it's great fun too. I play traditional music, have done since I was about 6, and the only time you feel truly alive while doing it, is when you're playing for dancers!

*also, apologies if I offend anyone... tis just my humble Irish opinion... I saw Lord of the dance recently though, and felt utterly let down by it, as I felt everything there was stuff that I could have danced myself. The woman that sang the Irish songs didn't have a word of the language, and I know myself and my family felt it made the song useless. She was singing a very very sad song with a huge smile on her face, and dancing around the place to it. Riverdance, I was so impressed I wanted to go back to Irish dancing for it. So now.. I shall stop my rant :)
