Have you seen the broadway hit, Fosse?

If not and you're a fan of jazz dance...then run to your local video store and rent (or purchase)! It is phenominal! I LOVE this show and watch it on a regular basis.

Fosse the broadway show is a tribute to Bob Fosse (one of the originators of jazz dance who has is own distinct style) with dancers who learned directly from him and who are carrying on his legacy. The show includes works from his biggest productions (i.e. Chicago, Steam Heat, Mr. Bojangles, etc.).

Check it out and post your comments here...

There's just something about Bob Fosse's dance style. Every single movement has meaning...and it can seem really fluid or purposefully staggard. I just LOVE it!

I love, love, love, love, LOVE Bob Fosse! I saw Fosse three times, each with a different touring cast when it came to Toronto, and I managed to find a retailer around here that sold the DVD. Oooh, it made me happy, and it reinforced my statement that I would give limbs to see Ben Vereen and Ann Reinking perform live.

I love the fact that Fosse didn't waste anything in his choreography. Everything that the dancers do is to make a statement, right down to the flicker of a finger. After seeing a number of Fosse shows, I find that I can't stand choreography that uses arm motions just for the sake of having arm motions there. There needs to be a purpose behind it.

On an amusing side note: Spamalot, the new Monty Python musical on Broadway has a playful nudge at Fosse during one of the big numbers. It was just hilarious to see "King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table" (aka. Tim Curry, David Hyde Pierce, Hank Azaria, Christopher Siebert et al) doing a Fosse-esque combination in armour. :P

Agreed! Can you even imagine how blessed they must feel to have studied with THE Bob Fosse! The performances on DVD are amazing, but there's just something about an in-person show that makes it more unique.

It's so amazing he put that much thought into his choreography. It wasn't just above the movement and the placement of the body...it was the feeling, the impression, the experience the audience had. Ahh...gotta love Fosse!

I bet that was pretty funny to see...

Hey,
I like Fosse but unfortunately had a teacher who loved him a tad bit too much and I spent years and years of my life learning only Fosse when I was to learn "jazz" (he would fosse everything up... so we did "Hair" Fosse-versioned, "Rent Fosse-versioned, etc...).
On the positive side, even now years after this I know every single movement to most "Chicago" songs! And to "Sweet charity"!
Love, Cami

Wow! I can definately see the ups and downs of this. Way positive to have learned Fosse's style, but bummer to have to always do Fosse instead of just regular jazz.

Pretty cool you still know most of the movements! I would LOVE to learn someday!!!!

It sounds really familiar (Fosse, I mean), but I'm not exactly sure where I heard it. I think it was for a Fosse-style show in Chicago or something that there was a poster for in my dance studio. Bob Fosse sounds really cool, though.

Welcome to the Forum, lightupthestage7!

Bob Fosse coined a new style of jazz dance where every single movement the dancer makes has meaning. I know he had choreography in the musical "Chicago."

There's an actual DVD called "Fosse" which is a tribute to Bob Fosse and his amazing dancing/choreography. It features dancers performing numbers that Fosse choreographed over this lifetime. Check it out...you'll love it!

Thanks, Medira! I knew Fosse had a lot of great shows...I just couldn't think of anything besides Chicago.

Fosse is pretty cool. My dance instructor does at least one Fosse piece, or uses the Fosse style in her show at the end of the year. The movements are either very sharp or fluid. The movements and bending or stretching is to the extremes is what my dance instructor always says. Fosse is definitely unique.
