I signed up for a Tap dancing class out of curiosity (it was scheduled at a studio where I go to take other partner dancing lessons). Little did I know that my instructor would make us to crazy things like improvs and give us homework assignments :( Now I could drop out or brave it... Sor far I'm thinking about doing my homework... But I need help.

The homework is to think about a song, something really simple and somewhat popular, and try to tap the first few lines of the song.. Now I've no idea how to go about picking a song or even where to begin tapping in a manner that reflects the _melody_ of the song in a recognizable manner... I'm neither musically creative nor did I grow up in the US (which means that most of the songs that you think are common and obvious are ones I've never heard about).

So help anybody? Maybe some song ideas and some input on how to go about figuring out how to tap the song?

He said "popular" song, not necessarily chart song? I just looked at the BBC chart and I don't know anything in there. Think of something popular, even if oldish. Green Day? Rolling Stones? Beatles? Listen to the words, sing dah dah dah along with it, and then you'll have to apply whatever steps you've learned so far.

I don't know if this is what he had in mind but say it was

"Will you still feed me, will you still need me,
when I'm 64",
that would go

Dah d'da dah dah, dah d'da dah dah,
da dah, da dah, DAH

which you could do as

step, ball change, step, step, step, ball change, step step
step heel, step heel, stamp.

I really don't know if that's what your instructor had in mind, but hope it helps.
