Sorry if this has already been covered, just point me in the right direction if it has!
I have extensive dance experience, and have done irish step dancing and vernacular jazz (the precursor-to-tap style of the 20s/30s). I am planning on starting tap soon, and I wanted opinions on shoes! I'll ask my instructor once I find one, but I'd like to shop around a bit and have an idea what's on the market.
I would like to start in heels because I like the look, and I have experience dancing in heels from my ballroom. If that sounds stupid and petty, let me know... I was thinking of a feminine oxford, with a ~1.5" (no more than 2") cuban heel. Any ideas were I might find a shoe like that, or a better option for a newbie? Thanks! |

| So I found a capezio oxford with a low heel. It doesn't have taps, but I could add those. However, it is listed as a "theatrical" shoe. Is it not strong enough to be a tap shoe, then? Has anyone tried tapping in that model? |

| I don't know that shoe, but I would't swap my Capezio split sole shoes, very low heel, for anything. It's the soft leather and total flexibility that does it for me. Closest thing to dancing in bare feet but with taps on, which is what I always longed for when all you could get were rock hard leather that took years to break in. I don't think heels go with tap, not the style you mention anyway. You need to "get down" with tap. Can't do that in heels, unless you're doing what I call "cabaret style" That's my personal opinion anyway. Hope it helps you. |

| Thanks for the reply! I saw the split sole shoes, they look amazing. I have to go to my local dance store and see if I can try some on, and maybe ask them about various styles. |

Yeah, this doesn't seem to be a very active board. Other dance forums I visit have loads of posting going on, but this one... a little slower. ;)
But the people seem very knowledgeable and friendly, so quality over quantity, I suppose! |
